The Society of S – Susan Hubbard

Terry picked this one up for me, and she was anxious for me to read it. For some reason, it got pushed towards the bottom of pile, but I regret this now. So, the general gist: Girl lives with her dad, his unusual helpers and a personal cook. Her mom left when she was an infant. Her life is solitary, but fulfilling. At some point, she has contact with the outside world, makes a best friend and realizes how unusual her life, and her father are. Then, best friend gets killed – hell breaks loose. She figures out what her family (and she) is (hint: vampires) and goes on a search for the best friend’s killer and her mom.

The plot itself isn’t very interesting or original (which is probably why I put it on the bottom of the pile) but it’s just written so well. It’s supposed to be a bit of a mystery, and that didn’t hook me, but I was into this vampiric legend or canon. This one has a bit of a twist, that I wish they would have gone into more – apparently she just wrote a sequel, but it’s zombies – and I think you all know how I feel about zombies.
