The Virginity Club – Kate Brian

Okay, this is the last of the latest spate of YA! This was cute. And it was a dollar at the Strand, and I was trying to prove to Jill that I could read anything for a buck. That’s my story, and I am sticking to it.

This was just a story about 4 or 5 girlfriends in high school, competing for a scholarship and one of the clauses is “purity of body and mind.” It was actually pretty well-written, going in and out of each character’s stories easily and not doing the conventional “each character gets a chapter in their own voice” tactic.  I think it took a few different stories of uniquely different girls and their relationships with their families, their bodies and sex in a pretty realistic portrayal. The only thing that really bugged me is that while most of the stories wrap up nicely at the end, one of the characters does this weird teenage marriage thing and it just kind of felt a little too neat for me. Not preachy, but more like, pandering?

Apparently the book was originally published as “The V Club.” I am going to see if I can dig up any good gossip about the name change.
